I watched the animation “Sailor Moon.” It is different from the animations that I know because it is a very simplistic drawing style animation. The characters are nicely detailed but the backgrounds are very simple and seem almost like sketches. This makes it a unique animation because it seemed almost like a comic book that has come to life with sound and movement.
Disney and Pixar's most recent animations are almost all 3D animations where the characters look very real. However, older Disney movie classics are similar to this drawing style animation because they are also 2D animations. Though they are 2D like sailor moon is, I do not know of any Disney classic movies that have a similar concept and theme to sailor moon. The graphics is really the only similarity between "Sailor Moon" and Disney movies. None of the Disney and Pixar animations have the same comic book feel as "Sailor Moon" does.
I learned from this animation that storytelling have the ability to come to life in 2D just as well as 3D. Amazing realistic graphics are not necessary to make and interesting, effective, compelling, and entertaining animation that you can really get into and enjoy watching. Many anime animations bring about more of a fantasy and made up style of storytelling with completely fictional characters and worlds. "Sailor Moon" fits perfectly into this fictional, fantasy theme.
I like the use of animations that look like drawings that have come to life because of the use of more simplistic animation techniques. I can use the techniques used in this style animation in my own work. I am going to attempt to use the very simplistic distorting and squeezing of oval shapes that are the mouths on characters, as a way to make it look like the characters are actually talking. "Sailor Moon" did this effectively and hopefully I will be able to also.
